On the Homotopy of Finite Cw-complexes with Polycyclic Fundamental Group
نویسنده
چکیده
Let X be a finite connected CW-complex of dimension q. If its fundamental group π1(X) is polycyclic of Hirsch number h > q, we show that at least one homotopy group πi(X) is not finitely generated. If h = q or h = q − 1 the same conclusion holds unless X is an Eilenberg-McLane space K(π1(X), 1). Mathematics subject classification : 57R70; 55P15; 57Q10.

On 2-dimensional Ctf-complexes with a Single 2-cell
In this paper we are interested in finite connected 2-dimensional CTF-complexes, each with a single 2-celL We show any two such complexes have the same homotopy type if their fundamental groups are isomorphic. In fact, there is a homotopy equivalence inducing any isomorphism of the fundamental groups. We also study the homotopy factorizations of such spaces into finite sums. In this paper we ar...
متن کاملOn the Homotopy Type and the Fundamental Crossed Complex of the Skeletal Filtration of a CW-Complex
We prove that if M is a CW-complex, then the homotopy type of the skeletal filtration of M does not depend on the cell decomposition of M up to wedge products with n-disks D, when the later are given their natural CW-decomposition with unique cells of order 0, (n − 1) and n; a result resembling J.H.C. Whitehead’s work on simple homotopy types. From the Colimit Theorem for the Fundamental Crosse...
متن کاملFinite Spaces and Simplicial Complexes
Finite simplicial complexes provide a general class of spaces that is sufficient for most purposes of basic algebraic topology. There are more general classes of spaces, in particular the finite CW complexes, that are more central to the modern development of the subject, but they give exactly the same collection of homotopy types. The relevant background on simplicial complexes will be recalle...
متن کاملOn the Second Homotopy Module of Two-dimensional Cw Complexes
Let A' be a connected 2-dimensional CW complex. This note reproves from a very simple point of view two classical theorems of H. Hopf relating the homology of the fundamental group it = irx(X) of X and the Hurewicz map on ir2(X). This point of view also allows the dual theorems to be proved. If w is a finite group, a new interpretation is given for tf,(7r; Z) (/' = 2, 3) in terms of v2(X).
متن کاملEquivariant Cw-complexes and the Orbit Category
We give a general framework for studying G-CW complexes via the orbit category. As an application we show that the symmetric group G = S5 admits a finite G-CW complex X homotopy equivalent to a sphere, with cyclic isotropy subgroups.
